More than 21,000 runners have registered for the 11th edition of the Stanchart Nairobi International scheduled for Sunday, organizers said on Saturday.
Out of this number, runners from 64 countries and regions will be among those who will parade for the charitable event whose proceeds go towards restoring sight to children suffering from cataracts under the mantra of "Seeing is Believing.
Peter Gitau, the chairman of the organizing committee said in Nairobi Kenyans turned out in large numbers to register for the marathon despite the recent security threat that the country faced when armed terrorists invaded a shopping mall in Nairobi and killed over 70 people.
"We are very excited to have had such a huge number of people registered and are grateful to all who have made a stand by enlisting for this year's marathon," Gitau said during a final press briefing on the eve of the event.
"For every registration we have had, more children will benefit by having a life-changing operation that will have them regain their sight and live a normal life. We promise to deliver an exceptional event that will exceed expectations," Gitau said.
Over 700 runners will participate in the 42km full marathon, out of which will be a number of elite runners whose identities have not been disclosed, whereas the 21km half marathon will feature over 5,000 runners.
Kenyan police have promised tight security during the event that will be closely monitored both through air and on the ground. Endi
