Some 647 Standard Chartered private bank clients in Singapore have had their monthly bank statements for this February stolen, the bank said on Thursday.
The bank said the theft occurred from one of the servers of Fuji Xerox Singapore, a third-party service provider which prints bank statements for the bank's private bank clients.
The bank also confirmed that its IT and data security system were not compromised, and no unauthorized transactions resulting from this incident were found until now.
As a precautionary measure, the bank said it is contacting the affected private banking clients.
No clients from StanChart's other banking divisions - including retail, wholesale and small- and medium-sized enterprises banking - were affected, the bank added.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the city-state's central bank, said it will review StanChart's investigation report and consider if regulatory action against the bank is warranted.
The MAS said the theft is "an isolated case", but underscores the need for heightened vigilance in financial institutions, including close management of risks pertaining to service providers.
Local media Channel NewsAsia said that StanChart Private Bank caters to high net worth individuals with investable assets of more than 2 million U.S. dollars. Endi
