A Filipino- Chinese businessman here owns what may soon be recognized as the largest pearl in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Richard King, chairman of the Crown Regency Hotel, said in an interview on Monday that a group of gemologists from the Guinness Book of World Records will arrive here on Thursday to formally inspect the 18-inch pearl dubbed as the "Pearl of the Kings."

Currently, the Guinness recognizes the "Pearl of Allah" in the United States, which measures six kilograms, as the largest pearl in the world.

"Based on our initial measurement, the 'Pearl of Kings' weighs around nine kilograms. That is why we are confident that we could be certified for the Guinness Book of World Records," King said.

He said he inherited the pearl from his grandfather. The gem reportedly came from the waters of Palawan where the "Pearl of Allah" was also found.

The "Pearl of Allah" also known as the "Pearl of Lao Tzu," was found by a diver in Brooke's Point in the western Philippine province of Palawan.

"We have decided to display the 'Pearl of the Kings' at the oceanarium in Crown Regency to serve as one of its attractions," King said.

The pearl owned by the King family is non-nacreous or having no iridescent finish. It is said to have come from a giant clam. Endi
