Myanmar opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), has announced that it will enter the upcoming general election in 2015 no matter whether the constitution is amended or not, local media quoted the NLD Central Committee as reporting Sunday.
The party would contest the polls, which NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi had said cannot be fair unless the constitution is changed, U Nyan Win, the party spokesman was quoted as saying.
The NLD decided at its central committee meeting Saturday to suggest amending 168 points from 14 chapters of the constitution, including an article that disqualifies Suu Kyi from becoming president or vice president as her spouse or children owes allegiance to a foreign country.
Suu Kyi was married to the late British scholar Michael Aris with her two sons being foreign citizens.
According to the 2008 constitution, the amendment needs the consent of more than 75 percent of the parliament members, followed by more than 50 percent approval in a nationwide referendum.
Myanmar's parliament formed a Constitution Review Committee in July to look into the matter ahead of 2015 polls.
Meanwhile, the ruling party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has also been holding its central committee meeting for days to discuss the issue of constitutional amendment and a resolution is expected to be adopted at the end of the meeting later on Sunday. Endi
