British Bafta film awards shortlist announced

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Wednesday announced the shortlist for its annual film awards.

Top of the nominations table is the movie "Gravity," nominated in 11 categories including best film, best director, original screenplay, original music, cinematography, editing, production design, and sound and special effects.

Not far behind are films "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle," which each earned 10 nominations.

On the Best Film nomination shortlist are "12 Years a Slave," "American Hustle," "Captain Phillips," "Gravity," "Philomena."

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" is nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside "Gravity," "Philomena," "Rush," "Saving Mr Banks" and "The Selfish Giant."

Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated in Leading Actor for "The Wolf of Wall Street," which is also nominated in Director for Martin Scorsese, Adapted Screenplay and Editing.

Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins are nominated as Leading Actress and Supporting Actress for "Blue Jasmine," and its writer Woody Allen is nominated for Original Screenplay.

Joel and Ethan Coen receive an Original Screenplay nomination for "Inside Llewyn Davis," which is also nominated for Cinematography and Sound.

"Blue is the Warmest Color," "The Great Beauty," "Metro Manila" and "Wadjda" are nominated alongside "The Act of Killing" in the Film Not in the English Language category.

The Animated Film nominees are "Despicable Me 2," "Frozen" and "Monsters University."

The British Short Animation nominations are "Everything I Can See From Here," "I Am Tom Moody" and "Sleeping With the Fishes," and the British Short Film nominations are "Island Queen," "Keeping Up With the Joneses," "Orbit Ever After," "Room 8" and "Sea View."

The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award are Dane DeHaan, George MacKay, Lupita Nyong'o, Will Poulter and Lea Seydoux.

The Awards will be held on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

The BAFTA Awards are seen internationally as a pre-cursor to the Hollywood Oscars and give some indication of what films are likely to catch the eye of award-givers. Endi
