New Lao finance minister appointed

The Lao government has appointed former governor of Xayabury province, Lien Thikeo, as the country's new finance minister, official media reported Thursday.

Lien will replace his predecessor Phouphet Khamphounvong who will take a new position as minister to the Government Office, said KPL news agency.

A ceremony announcing the appointment of the new finance minister was held at the Ministry of Finance on Thursday and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad.

The appointment follows a decree by Lao President Choummaly Sayasone on March 3.

Phouphet expressed congratulations to Lien on his appointment and expressed his belief that his successor would do his utmost to improve the country's financial system. "Over the past two years, we have actively implemented the resolution of the ninth Party Congress and the seventh five-year socio-economic development plan based on four breakthroughs, three directives of the party and political ideology education for officials and also improved financial system in line with the current conditions," said Phouphet.

After the announcement, the deputy prime minister called on the minister of finance and senior officials to work harder.

Phongsavanh Sitthavong has been appointed as the new governor of Xayabury province replacing Lien who had held the position for eight years.

During Lien's time as Xayabury governor, the province experienced constant GDP growth. This year, the province reached per capita GDP of 1,850 U.S. dollars. Endi
