Russia has deployed a regiment of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems in Moscow region, a senior officer said Monday.
The regiment based in the town of Zvenigorod west of the capital is also equipped with the missile-cannon Pantsir-S anti-aircraft artillery weapon systems, Russian airspace forces commander Andrei Dyomin said at the new regiment's enacting event.
The Pantsir-S is designed for the S-400 systems' own protection.
"Until the end of 2014, one more regiment of the airspace forces will be re-armed with S-400 Triumph systems," Dyomin said.
Thus, by the end of the year, half of Russia's airspace defense regiments, that is four, will be armed with the S-400. This will mark the first stage of rearmament of the airspace forces, he added.
The regiment deployed in Zvenigorod is capable of covering Russia's central industrial region from the incoming airspace attacks on the distance up to 400 km. The S-400 can destroy up to 36 targets at once. Endi
