Malta's courts decided 880 divorce cases since the introduction of the divorce legislation in October, 2011, Emanuel Mallia, Ministry for Home Affairs and National Security revealed in parliament on Monday evening.
Replying to a parliamentary question, Dr. Mallia said 40 divorce cases were decided in 2011, 420 in 2012, and 334 in 2013. In the first four months of 2014, another 86 judgements were handed down which bringing up the number of decided cases to a total of 880.
Malta was not introduced divorce until October 2011, despite civil marriage being introduced in 1975, except for the recognition of divorces granted by foreign courts.
It was the Nationalist Party MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando who presented a private member's motion for the introduction of Maltese divorce. On the 25th July, 2011, the parliament of Malta voted to legalize divorce, following a May referendum.
The largest amount of divorce applications was filed to courts in the first weeks following the divorce law was ever enacted. A total of 222 divorce applications were submitted between October and December 2011. Endi
