Iran, powers to start expert-level nuclear talks Wednesday

Iran and six world powers will start a new round of expert-level talks on the nuclear issue in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Wednesday, Press TV reported on Tuesday.

Experts from Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain plus Germany -- will hold a new round of talks on June 4-5, Iranian nuclear negotiator Hamid Baeidinejad was quoted as saying by Press TV.

Baeidinejad, the director general for political and international security affairs at Iran's foreign ministry, will head Iran experts team and Stephen Clement, an aide to the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, will represent the P5+1 group.

The meeting will work on the details of a possible comprehensive deal on Tehran's nuclear program ahead of a high- level nuclear meeting slated for June 16 in Vienna.

Under a landmark interim deal made in Geneva last November between Iran and the P5+1 group, Iran agreed to freeze some controversial nuclear activities within six months in exchange for a limited ease of western sanctions.

Iran and the six powers have held several rounds of nuclear talks this year. The latest one ended in Vienna on May 16 without reaching any deal.

Western countries accuse Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons and demand that Iran significantly scale back its nuclear program and subject it to more transparency.

Tehran says it has the right to develop nuclear programs under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes only. Endi
