S. Korea urges DPRK to select cooperation instead of nuclear weapons

South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won on Wednesday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to select cooperation with Seoul while abandoning its nuclear weapons.

"North Korea (DPRK) should clearly recognize it is cooperation with us, not nuclear weapons, that can guarantee its future," Chung said at a ceremony marking the 64th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Chung said the government will make more aggressive efforts to prepare for peaceful reunification of the divided Korea while dealing sternly with the DPRK's threats.

Concerns remained over the DPRK's fourth nuclear test after Pyongyang threatened a new form of nuclear test in late March. The third test was staged in February 2013.

The DPRK fired some 90 short-range missiles in late February and March in protest against the joint military drills between Seoul and Washington.

The two Koreas exchanged artillery fires in the disputed western sea border on May 22, some two months after trading hundreds of artillery shells in late March.

Chung called on the DPRK to immediately give up its nuclear ambitions and play a role as a responsible member of the international society, urging Pyongyang to choose the path of co- prosperity with South Korea. Endi
