Renewable energy is a priority for the government, according to deputy Economy Minister Jerzy Witold Pietrewicz who was commenting on the first reading of a renewable energy bill in the Sejm (lower house) on Tuesday.
Pietrewicz stressed that alternative energy sources were a necessity for Poland's energy security and pointed out that close to 90 percent of Poland's energy came from coal.
Under the new laws, renewable energy will be supplied by auction and suppliers will receive government aid over a 15-year period. Pietrewicz called this solution "cost-optimal" and noted that there was no risk of price hikes for consumers.
The new laws also limit the production of renewable energy by the co-combustion of coal and biomass. Currently co-combustion generates about 50 percent of renewable energy in Poland.
The bill has been referred to the Sejm's Energy and Energy Raw-Materials Committee. Endi
