Court orders pre-trial detention of ex-Georgian president in absentia

The Tbilisi City Court of Georgia has ordered a pre-trial detention in absentia of Mikheil Saakashvili, the immediate former president of the South Caucasus country.

The pre-trial detention was proposed by the Georgian chief prosecutor's office after it had filed with the court charges against the former president.

Preliminary hearings have been set for Sept. 22 this year after a presiding judge at the Tbilisi City Court decided on the admissibility of evidence materials submitted by the parties of prosecution and defense.

Saakashvili is charged along with four of his previous senior officials with exceeding authorities in cracking down upon democratic demonstrators in November of 2007 and in seizing private properties of a dissident billionaire who soon died of heart problems.
