Kiev says Poland halts reverse gas supply to Ukraine

Poland cut off reverse natural gas supplies to Ukraine on Wednesday afternoon, the head of Ukraine's Ukrtransgaz Company said.

"At 2 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) Poland stopped its reverse gas supplies to Ukraine in a range of 4 million cubic meters," Igor Prokopiv told reporters.

He said that Poland was forced to cut off the supplies after its gas imports from Russia had been dropped.

Prokopiv accused Russia of limiting gas supplies to Poland in order to disrupt the reverse deliveries to Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Poland's major gas company, PGNiG, said its gas flows from Russia had dropped by 24 percent.

In mid-April, Ukraine started a reverse flow of gas deliveries through Poland from the European spot market to trim its dependence on Russian fuel supplies.

The so-called "reverse gas flows" allow gas to flow in the opposite direction to traditional streams of Europe's gas pipelines, which were designed to send gas in only one direction. Endi
