China's Zhao Qinggang broke the 25-year-old javelin throw Asian record with 89.15 meters at the Asian Games here on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Chinese national champion set the record in his last attempt, breaking the previous mark of 87.60m established by Japan's Kazuhiro Mizoguchi on May 27, 1989.

Zhao, from northeast China's Liaoning Province, failed to enter the final round in the Moscow World Championships with a throw of 77.61m. Three weeks later he won the gold at the Chinese National Games held in his hometown with 83.14m.

Japan's Ryohei Arai took silver with 84.42 and Uzbekistan's Ivan Zaytsev won bronze with 83.68. Enditem
