The tram network in Prague was halted by black ice for hours on Monday night, Prague Transport Company (DPP) spokeswoman Aneta Rehkova said Tuesday.
It was the first time in history that adverse weather completely paralyzed the city's tram network. It is not clear when operations will resume.
The tram operation was restricted on Monday evening over frosty trolleys and they have been replaced by buses where the metro is not available. The DPP has put in operation about 100 more buses than usual.
About 100 trams have been stranded on tracks in the streets and the DPP has been pulling them to tram depots one after another.
Frost and black ice also collapsed road, railway and tram traffic in other parts of the Czech Republic and electricity supply has been interrupted in many places. Over 100,000 people were affected by the transport breakdown.
Meteorologists have warned that black ice might continue all over the country until Wednesday evening. Endit
