The European Union (EU) allocated 3 million euros (about 3.42 million U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid for people affected by severe flooding in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar, said the European Commission on Thursday.

More than 1 million people have been affected, about 300,000 displaced and around 300 people killed by heavy rains and flooding throughout the region, according to the Commission.

The funding would bring immediate assistance, including shelter, food, clean water and health care as well as blankets, hygiene materials and mosquito nets, to the affected populations, said the Commission.

The Commission hoped that this would help those affected recover their livelihoods and sources of income, and prevent outbreaks of diseases in affected areas due to water stagnation. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars) Endit
