Latvia's incumbent President Andris Berzins has taken a decision not to run for re-election in this year's presidential election, his office said Friday.

Berzins announced his decision after reflecting at length on the results achieved during the last year of his presidency.

Solvita Aboltina, the leader of Latvia's ruling centre-right Unity party, said Berzins did not have sufficient support in parliament to secure a second four-year term in office. The centrist Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) is the only one of the three coalition partners to have expressed support for Berzins' re-election.

Berzins was elected Latvian president by a parliamentary vote in July 2011.

The country's next presidential election is due to take place in July 2015. Endit
