Poles went to the polls Sunday in a presidential election that is likely to put incumbent President Bronislaw Komorowski in a second five-year term.

Voting at more than 27,000 polling stations across the country began at 7:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) and will continue until 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT).

There are about 30 million eligible voters out of the total population of more than 38 million in Poland, according to the National Electoral Commission.

Eleven candidates, including Komorowski, are running for the presidency after collecting the required 100,000 signatures of voters each in the run-up to the election.

Opinion polls conducted in April showed that the incumbent president, a candidate of the ruling Civic Platform party, will garner 43 percent of the vote, while Andrzej Duda, who is backed by the opposition Law and Justice party, 23 percent.

The first official results are not expected before late Monday. If no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote, the two with the highest score will compete in a second round on May 24. Endi
