Brunei's consumer price index (CPI) fell by 0.7 percent in June compared to the previous month owing to a decrease in prices of computers and computer accessories as well as natural plants and flowers, according to the latest statistics released by Brunei's Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) Sunday.

In its monthly CPI report, JPKE said the recreation and culture index fell by 2.6 percent.

JPKE said the non-food index decreased by 0.6 percent while the food and non-alcoholic beverages index decreased by 0.7 percent due to lower prices for rice and cereals (0.1 percent), meat (0.5 percent), fish and seafood (1.1 percent) and other food.

The restaurants and hotel index increased by 0.5 percent owing to higher prices of food at selected restaurants and cafes.

The indices for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels and education remained unchanged.

JPKE said compared to June 2015, the CPI for June 2016 has decreased by 1.1 percent mainly due to fall in indices of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 4.2 percent, transport by 1.5 percent and food and non-alcoholic beverages by 1.4 percent.

CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period. Brunei's list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household. Endit
