StarTimes signs 17.9 million USD agreement with Ghana FA

StarTimes Group, China's leading pay-TV operator, signed a media agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) worth a little over 17.9 million U.S. dollars in Beijing, the GFA said in a release here on Wednesday.
The deal will see StarTimes acquiring all media rights of the Ghana Premier League, and all FA-organised leagues and competitions including women's league for the next 10 years.
StarTimes will also provide 10 artificial pitches and a fully equipped modern OB van to the GFA over the period and invest more in the production of programs on the Premier League and broadcast more league matches in Ghana and other African countries.
The President of the GFA Kwesi Nyantakyi said the partnership is looking forward to improving development of football in Ghana.
"We authorize media rights of all major leagues or tournaments under GFA to StarTimes. And StarTimes will deeply involve itself in the production and promotion of these leagues and bring much investment to our country," Nyantakyi said.
The President of StarTimes Group Pang Xinxing told reporters that the partnership is not only a cooperation between the two sides but also a starting of cooperation between China and Africa on football industry.
"We would like to bring more excellent football matches to nearly 9 million subscribers of StarTimes in Africa and we may introduce Ghana Premier League to Chinese football fans in the future, being a bridge between Chinese and African sports industries," said Pang.
StarTimes is a Chinese TV operator in football broadcasting. In 2015, StarTimes signed an exclusive broadcasting contract with the German Bundesliga and the International Champions Cup (ICC) for 5 consecutive years.
In June 2016, StarTimes also signed an exclusive broadcasting contract with the Chinese Super League for three years and acquired media rights to provide extensive coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa of the European qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The Ghana Premier League is the first top African native league that StarTimes has signed an exclusive broadcast agreement. Endit
