A 33-year-old man lost his life during flash floods on Zakynthos island in western Greece on Sunday, local fire brigade said, as the entire country has been hit by a cold front.

The local man had gone missing since Saturday evening. His car was found abandoned in a flooded ravine and a few hours later his dead body was retrieved.

Heavy rainfall and strong wind have caused problems in many parts of Greece.

The fire service in Attica region, for example, received more than 250 telephone calls for help during the weekend to pump out flooded basements, while eight persons were freed from cars in streets overwhelmed by water.

According to the national weather service, the cold front will continue until Wednesday. Endit
