A 5-1 rout of Marseille in Sunday's Classico gave French reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain coach and players a huge boost in their confidence, as they still remained in the title race against Monaco and Nice.

PSG recorded the biggest-ever road victory over their arch-rival at the Velodrome Stadium, shattering previous record of 3-0 on March 9, 2003.

The defending champions are currently three points behind leaders Monaco and ahead of Nice on goal difference with 11 games remaining.

"We wanted three points to close the gap against Monaco and Nice. We have to maintain the rigour, rhythm and desire from the players," said head coach Unai Emery, "It's a great game for our confidence and confirming our progress in the work."

Recording just two draws and one win with a last-gasp goal at home, PSG found their familiar dominance in the league, making it special when they visited a tough opponent like Marseille.

"We cannot forget our last three home games, of which we drew two and won the match in the last minute. We have to overcome our opponents' deep defense," Emery told Canal+ after the historic win.

Brazilian center back Marquinhos, who opened the scoring account for PSG early in the game, dedicated his goal to fans.

"It was important, not only for us, but also for the fans. After that, we controlled the game," he said.

Midfielder Blaise Matuidi also enjoyed a special night as he ended his scoring drought of the campaign.

"When I was a little kid, I dreamed of playing games like that," said Matuidi, who finished a goal-crazy night for PSG, adding that the team will fight until the end with confidence. Endit
