TUNIS, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The assets and properties of eight influential businessmen, recently arrested for suspicions of corruption and damage to national security, were confiscated, announced on Friday Mounir Ferchici, the president of the National Commission for Management of the Confiscated Assets.

At a press conference at the headquarters of the commission, Ferchici said that the persons concerned by this decision are already under house arrest in order to bring them to justice for involvement in corruption, smuggling and breaches of public order.

About a dozen of influential Tunisians, including businessmen and customs officials, were arrested during the last three days before placing some of them under house arrest, while others were forbidden to travel.

This campaign has aroused a wave of popular appreciation and even of most of the opposing political parties and a majority of civil society.

A peaceful march is scheduled near the headquarters of the Tunisian government in Tunis to support the Head of the National Unity Government Youssef Chahed in his fight against the big heads of corruption.

On the other hand, 91.7 percent of Tunisians are satisfied with this campaign carried out by the Tunisian government at such a dynamic time, announced a Tunisian opinion polling agency.

According to the latest political barometer of Sigma Conseil, 52.8 percent of the investigations believed that this campaign "translates a government will to eradicate corruption."

The chief of Sigma Conseil Hassen Zargouni said that, according to 38.4 percent of Tunisians, this campaign is only an attempt "to cover up" in order to appease popular anger after the manifestations in the southern Tataouine province since several weeks.

According to the same political barometer, the satisfaction of the population in Youssef Chahed's performance reached 76 percent from 61.6 percent. Enditem
