KHARTOUM, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Abyei Joint Oversight Committee on the part of Sudan on Friday announced that the talks between Sudan and South Sudan on the disputed Abyei area would resume on coming Tuesday, Sudanese Media Center (SMC) reported.

"We have received an invitation from the African Union to resume the meetings according to the previous references," Head of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee on the part of Sudan, Hassan Ali Nimir, was quoted as saying.

"Sudan's agenda is clear regarding the importance of convening the meetings according to the previous references, putting a fixed and clear table for this year's meetings, and facilitating the work of the organizations at the area together with the return of the displaced people," he noted.

Sudan and South Sudan are disputing over the oil-rich Abyei, a border area inhabited mainly by South Sudan's Dinka Ngok tribe and Sudan's Arab Mesiria tribe.

Over 4,000 Ethiopian soldiers were deployed in Abyei as part of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei after the area had witnessed escalating tensions between the two tribes and Sudan and South Sudan armies, which killed dozens of people and caused population displacement. Enditem
