SKOPJE, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Thousands fans of the handball team Vardar celebrated in the streets of Skopje, the capital of Macedonia until late Sunday night, after the club won the European Championship title.

At the VELUX EHF Champions League Final held in Koln, Gemany, Vardar players beat the French side Paris Saint-Germain with a 24-23 scoreline, claiming their premiere trophy in the top European tournament.

Skopje City mayor Koce Trajanovski announced that city authorities will organize a "spectacular welcoming party" for the players on Tuesday, when they are expected to arrive in Macedonian capital.

But the fans were not ready to wait until Tuesday for celebrations. They gathered in the city square in Skopje, but also in other towns across the country, cheering and taking pride in the victory. They were wearing the red and black colors of the team and chanting sporting anthems.

Handball is one of the top national sports in Macedonian. Vardar is the first Macedonian club to win the EHF Champions League and the 13th overall club to win the trophy. Enditem
