Five die as dangerous heat wave sweeps Bulgaria

SOFIA, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Five people died and at least 50 others lost consciousness in Bulgaria on Saturday as heat wave hit the Balkan country, the authorities said.

The five deaths were reported in the capital of Sofia, where more than 30 others collapsed, local emergency medical center said.

Besides, 10 others lost consciousness in the Danube town of Ruse, three in another Danube town Vidin, as well as three in Kyustendil and three in Dupnitsa the southwestern Bulgaria, and two in the southern town of Pazardzhik.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), Ruse was the hottest town in Bulgaria on Saturday, at 44 degrees Celsius, while in Sofia the temperature reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

However, the NIMH said that temperatures would begin to fall, and on Sunday they will be from 32 to 37 Celsius. Enditem
