HO CHI MINH CITY, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's U-22 team on Wednesday had a lopsided victory of 4-0 over Timor Leste at the AFC U-23 Championship's qualifying round.
After the opening goal by Vietnamese player Duc Chinh in the 17th minute in Ho Chi Minh City in rain, two of his teammates scored three times after the break.
Vietnamese outstanding striker Cong Phuong delivered a powerful low shot outside the penalty area in the 67th minute, beating Timor Leste goalie Fagio.
Four minutes later, Cong Phuong successfully converted a penalty kick. Another Vietnamese player fixed the final score of 4-0 in the 87th minute.
On July 21, Vietnam will face China's Macao, while South Korea clash with Timor Leste.
Vietnam is hosting Group I of the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualification from July 19-23.
Vietnam has sent its national U-22 team to the AFC U-23 Championship qualification, as a preparation for its competing at the 2018 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games slated for August in Malaysia.
Forty teams will compete at the AFC U-23 Championship qualification. Sixteen squads will qualify to play in the final tournament, including China who have qualified automatically as hosts. Enditem
