BERLIN, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The "Wolves" part company with head coach Andries Jonker with immediate effect due to poor results, the Bundesliga side announced in an official statement on Monday.

Jonker is the first coach who received his marching orders in the new Bundesliga season after being in charge of 19 matches in all competitions.

"It were not only recent impressions from the Stuttgart game but also the stagnation in the development of our team, which was newly formed in the summer," Wolfsburg's spokesman Wolfgang Hotze said.

The 54-year-old coach took the reins in February 2017 and reaped only seven wins from 19 games. Hence, Wolfsburg's officials decided to give the team a new impetus with a new coach.

Former Mainz coach Martin Schmidt will take over after putting pen to paper on deal until June 2019.

"We are delighted that we have been able to sign Martin Schmidt so quickly. He is the right man for the upcoming tasks. We are convinced that his experience and strengths suit Wolfsburg very well," Wolfsburg's sporting director Olaf Rebbe said.

Wolfsburg sit currently on the 14th place of the Bundesliga standings. They encounter Werder Bremen at the 5th round on Tuesday. Enditem
