BISHKEK, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Former Prime Minister Sooronbai Sharipovich Jeenbekov has been elected as the new president of Kyrgyzstan, the country's Central Election Commission (CEC) announced Monday.
Jeenbekov served as prime minister from April 2016 to August 2017 before he resigned to run as the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan's presidential candidate.
He held the post of Director of the State Personnel Service from 2015-2016. In March 2016, he was appointed first deputy head of the presidential staff, before his appointment as prime minister.
He also served as the governor of the Osh region in southern Kyrgyzstan from 2010-2015 and the country's minister of agriculture in 2007.
Between the years 2008 and 2010, Jeenbekov left the government for business.
Jeenbekov was born on Nov. 16, 1958 in the village of Telman in the Kara-Kuldzhinsky district of the Osh region.
He graduated from the Kyrgyz Agricultural Institute, majoring in zoological engineering. He also obtained an accounting degree from the Kyrgyz Agrarian University.
Jeenbekov worked as a teacher and a livestock specialist before he went into politics.
Jeenbekov has said, on many occasions, that cooperation with China is a priority in Kyrgyzstan's foreign policy and that the country is ready to deepen bilateral relations.
During the pre-election debate, Jeenbekov said he would promote the country's comprehensive and beneficial cooperation with its neighbors, other parts of the world as well as international and regional organizations.
Jeenbekov is known as one of the closest associates of incumbent President Almazbek Atambayev. When Jeenbekov was nominated as a presidential candidate, Atambayev described him as a decent and honest person.
According to the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan, the country's president is elected for a six-year term, and one person can hold the highest office only once.
Atambayev's term will end on Dec. 1. Enditem
