"Justice League" tops North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's big-budget superhero film "Justice League" took the top spot at North American box office in its opening weekend with an estimated 96 million U.S. dollars, defeating "Wonder" and "Thor: Ragnarok."
"A much-needed 'up' weekend vs. the comparable frame a year ago is propelled by superheroes, family-friendly content, holiday-themed films and specialized titles that brought audiences to multiplexes in strong numbers as we head into Thanksgiving week," wrote movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore in an email to Xinhua.
"Justice League" is based on the DC Comics superhero team of the same name, consisting of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is the fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe.
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film features an ensemble cast of iconic DC characters as portrayed by Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher.
"Justice League" is scoring well with audiences as comScore/Screen Engine's PostTrak audience survey shows that the film is generating a solid 4 out of 5 stars from all audiences and particularly with females over 25 who are giving the film a whopping 90 percent positive score likely reflecting the favorable presence of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
The film brought in 185.5 million U.S. dollars internationally for a global launch of 281.5 million dollars.
Another newcomer, Lionsgate's "Wonder" opened with an estimated 27.05 million dollars in the second place. Based on the 2012 children's novel of the same name by R.J. Palacio, the film is directed by Stephen Chbosky and starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay.
"Lionsgate's heartwarming and brilliant 'Wonder' charms and moves audiences looking for an uplifting movie-going experience," wrote Dergarabedian.
"The film can expect a nice long run in theaters as moviegoers spread the positive word and thus could ultimately propel the film to over 100 million U.S. dollars in North America," he added.
Disney and Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok" moved to the third place with an estimated 21.78 million dollars in its third weekend, pushing its total to 247.4 million dollars after just 17 days in North American theaters.
The super hero film that based on the Marvel Comics character Thor has earned an estimated 738.1 million worldwide to date.
Paramount's Christmas-themed comedy "Daddy's Home 2" landed in the fourth place with an estimated 14.8 million dollars in its second weekend, bringing its 10-day cume to 50.57 million dollars in North America.
Fox's mystery drama film "Murder On The Orient Express" finished fifth with an estimated 13.8 million dollars in its second weekend, pushing its 10-day total to 51.72 million dollars in North America. Enditem
