TUNIS, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Rached Ghanouchi, leader of the Islamic Party "Ennahdha Movement" (Renaissance), the majority party in the Tunisian parliament, announced Saturday that he will not run for the presidential elections in October 2019.
On the sidelines of a meeting commemorating the eighth anniversary of the uprising of Jan. 14, 2011, Ghanouchi said the party will propose a candidate from outside "Ennahdha Movement," unlike the 2014 elections.
"Tunisia is in a difficult economic situation," Ghanouchi said, adding that the current mission of Youssef Chahed's government must focus on the real problems of the country and avoid as much as possible manipulation of state institutions for electoral calculations.
"Tunisia really needs to be governed by consensual power, a principle that our party is fully committed to ensure," said Ghanouchi.
This Islamic party holds until the end of 2018 the first position in terms of number of deputies in the Tunisian Parliament, with 69 deputies. Enditem
