TORONTO, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Canada's main stock market closed higher on Tuesday as shares of precious metal miners gained on the back of higher gold prices.
The Toronto Stock Exchange's benchmark Standard & Poor's/TSX Composite Index added 99.2 points, or 0.63 percent, to end the day at 15,937.44 points.
Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar lost 0.14 cents, at 75.69 U.S. dollar.
Among the gold stocks, Barrick Gold jumped 79 cents, or 4.6 percent, to 17.91 Canadian dollars, while Kirkland Lake Gold gained 67 cents, or 1.5 percent, to 45.16 Canadian dollars.
In the precious metal section, Pretium Resources surged 10.7 percent to 10.61 Canadian dollars while Semafo 5.6 percent to 3.37 Canadian dollars.
Among healthcare stocks, Bausch Health Companies lost 20 cents to close at 33.47 Canadian dollars while Canopy Growth fell 1.43 dollars to 61.38 Canadian dollars.
The most heavily traded shares by volume were Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd., Bombardier Inc and Encana Corp.
Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. soared 22 cents, or 9.78 percent, to 2.47 Canadian dollars on 77.6 million shares.
Bombardier Inc. shot up 26 cents, or 10.4 percent, to 2.76 Canadian dollars on 20.9 million shares.
Encana Corp. declined 13 cents, or 1.42 per cent, to 9.01 Canadian dollars on 11.9 million shares. Enditem
