ATHENS, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- A cold weather system named "Oceanis" by the meteorological service of the National Observatory of Athens has been sweeping through Greece on Saturday with local authorities reporting disruptions in travels.
The cold masses of air from northeastern Europe which reached Greece on Friday evening have sharply dropped temperatures by 10 degrees Celsius overnight with the lowest recorded at -6 Celsius at Florina town in northern Greece, according to Greek national news agency AMNA.
The cold front has brought snowfall to many parts of northern and central Greece, causing cancellations and delays at the airport of Thessaloniki city in the north. Regional roads have been closed in mountainous areas.
The rest of the mainland is battered mainly by heavy rainfall in many regions and less dense snowfall at the northern suburbs of Athens.
Moreover, gale force winds of up to 10 on the Beaufort scale have been blowing in the Aegean and Ionian Sea, affecting ferries services at the Aegean.
According to Greek meteorologists the cold wave will ease on Monday. Enditem
