ATHENS, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The cold weather system Oceanis as dubbed by Greek meteorologists continued to batter most of Greece on Sunday with snowfall, storms and high winds, causing road, sea and air transport disruptions.
Since the cold wave started hitting Greece on Friday evening, the Fire Brigade has received more than 340 telephone calls for help, according to an e-mailed press statement.
Rural roads in mountainous areas have been closed, while snow chains are necessary in other parts of the road network in northern and central Greece.
Gale force up to 10 Beaufort have led to the cancellation of dozens scheduled ferry departures for the Aegean and Ionian Sea islands, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.
In addition, flights have been cancelled at the airport of Thessaloniki city in northern Greece due to strong winds and low visibility.
According to the forecast of the meteorological service of the National Observatory of Athens, the cold front will begin to recede from Sunday evening. Enditem
