Tunisia's Essebsi announces decision not to seek presidential re-election

TUNIS, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi announced his decision not to run for a second term on Saturday, months before the presidential elections.

Essebsi made the annoucement at the first electoral congress of his Nidaa Tounes party, where he highlighted his future role in pulling together all national forces against the serious problems in Tunisia.

"We have to facilitate the path for young people to avoid major handicaps," Essebsi said.

The 93-year-old Tunisian president founded the Nidaa Tounes party in 2012. In 2014, he won the presidency with 55.68 percent of the votes. Enditem
