MANILA, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Six people, including three children, died and 14 others were injured in a head-on crash between a truck and a jeepney in the southern part of the main Luzon island on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
Police said the northbound jeepney that crashed with a southbound 10-wheeler dump truck in Libmanan town in Camarines Sur province, about 250 kilometers south of Manila, swerved on to the opposite lane and collided with the truck.
The driver and five passengers in the jeepney were among the dead, police said, adding the rest of the 16 passengers were injured.
Police said the victims were on their way home from a swimming outing at a local resort when the tragedy struck.
Initial investigation showed the driver of the jeepney was under the influence of alcohol.
The driver of the truck was unscathed, police added.
The elongated, flatbed passenger jeepneys are the most popular mode of public transport in the Philippines. These iconic vehicles have been plying the Philippine streets for decades.
Many accidents in the country are blamed on these poorly maintained vehicles.
There is an ongoing government effort to modernize the jeepneys and remove the rickety and old jeepneys from the streets for good. Enditem
