ATHENS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Six migrants lost their lives and 10 were injured in a car accident in northern Greece on Monday, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.
The driver of the mini-van which carried the migrants lost control and the vehicle went off the road under circumstances still unclear on the outskirts of Alexandroupolis, a town close to the border with Turkey.
One of the injured was in critical condition, six suffered serious injuries, and no women or children were among the passengers, according to the report.
The nationalities of the migrants are still unidentified.
Similar deadly accidents occur often in northern Greece in the past three years, since human trafficking networks have shifted to the land border between Greece and Turkey after the European Union signed an agreement with Turkey in 2016 to stem the flows into Europe via the Aegean Sea.
Official statistics showed that more than one million people have crossed into Greece from Turkey since 2015.
Most continued their journey to other European countries until the closure of borders along the Balkan route in 2016.
Approximately 70,000 remain stranded in Greece, according to data from the Greek government. Enditem
