SUVA, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Conservation of wetland ecosystems is essential for sustainable fresh water supply, flood mitigation and preserving biodiversity for plants, animals and humans, said a Fijian minister on Monday.
According to a government statement on Monday, during the 2020 wetland day celebration at the Upper Navua Conservation Area, in Serua on the west side of Fiji's main island Viti Levu, Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Waterways and Environment Mahendra Reddy said that wetland conservation is vital considering its role in the ecosystem.
"Wetlands are incredibly vital for humans, ecosystems, and for our climate as they nurture a great diversity of life," he said.
He urged Fijians to take care of the environment by being active in bringing about positive changes in human behavior towards it.
The Minister said human activities such as inappropriate disposal of waste ended up in their wetlands and mangroves, killing the very prospects of the marine prosperity wetlands that it provides to the communities. Enditem
