JUBA, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan said on Wednesday its recent call for opening up bids to international companies to undertake environmental audit will help control oil pollution which has led to children being born with deformities in the northern oil-producing regions.
Awow Daniel Chuang, Minister of Petroleum, said the proposed environmental audit will tell us exactly what areas have been contaminated and will help us find the solutions.
In January, the government said it will enhance environmental audit before oil exploration and drilling, adding that understanding the pollution damage will allow the country to put systems in place to prevent further damage as the young nation looks to ramp up production.
Chuang said they aim to get the best companies to undertake research that will tell the amount of damage caused in the oil-producing areas and what caused the damage.
The government is planning to launch the country's first oil and gas bidding round within the first quarter of 2020. Enditem
