ATHENS, April 11 (Xinhua) -- In the last 24 hours 72 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and three more deaths were registered in Greece, said Sotirios Tsiodras, the Greek Health Ministry's spokesman on the novel coronavirus pandemic, on Saturday.

The total COVID-19 infections in Greece now stand at 2,081 and deaths reached 93 since the start of the outbreak in the country on Feb. 26, he told a daily press briefing.

Among the victims, 90 percent had underlying health issues or their average age was above 70.

Some 75 patients were currently being treated in intensive care units. The average age of these patients is 67 years, and 77 percent of them have underlying health issues or are at least 70 years old.

A nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 23 and is due to end on April 27. During the press briefing, officials reiterated calls to the public to continue observing the restriction measures so that Greece can contain the spread of the virus.

Since March 23 until Saturday noon a total of 31,592 fines have been issued across the country for violations of the lockdown. Enditem
