BANGKOK, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A province in Central Thailand has on Thursday announced the launch of a brand new COVID-19 tracking application to trace possible cases of COVID-19 at high-risk areas.

Chachoengsao province on Thursday introduced the Mor Channa app, which allows individuals to know whether they are at COVID-19 high risk areas or not.

Areas shown in green on the app are low risk, while areas in red are high risk.

Somphote Ahunai, chief executive of Energy Absolute Plc, one of the companies that helped develop the app, said the tracking system will provide real-time data to the Ministry of Public Health's Department of Disease Control for analysis.

He said the app will indirectly help hospitals avoid overcrowding by keeping people out of high-risk areas.

"Without a vaccine, the fight against the virus could take as long as 12-18 months, so apps like these may be an essential tool in curbing the spread and reopening the economy," said Somphote.

Somphote said the longer the lockdown, the more the economy will deteriorate.

He said the COVID-19 tracking app can allow people to go out without fearing external factors, as well as practicing a hygienic lifestyle to prevent further infections. Enditem
