LONDON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has said that England international Adam Lallana will not play for the club again in order to protect his impending exit from the Premier League champions.
Lallana, who signed for Liverpool in 2014, had been due to leave at the end of June when his contract expired, but after the season was extended due to the COVID-19 crisis, he signed a short-term extension to remain at Anfield until the end of the season, after which he will be able to leave as a free agent.
Lallana has made 178 appearances for Liverpool since his move from Southampton, but has played just 15 times in the Premier League this season, and Klopp says that in order to protect the attacking midfielder's future, he won't play any more.
"It is clear Adam will leave the club in the summer, if the summer ever starts. I already miss everything about him. In this moment he is still here but we will miss him. He is an incredible professional," said Klopp.
"I will respect Adam a lot. Everything with Adam is sorted, but the future is his future. And if we need his help on the pitch we can get it. He trains 100 percent but as long as we don't need him, he will just train. From my point of view he is already a legend here, so he can become a legend somewhere else from next season," the German added.
Lallana has been linked with a possible move to Leicester City for next season, where he would be reunited with former Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers. Enditem
