HANOI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 14 new cases of COVID-19 infection on Monday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 976 with 24 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

Among the newly confirmed cases, one has recently returned to Vietnam from abroad and was quarantined upon arrival while the rest were recorded in Vietnam's central Da Nang city, central Quang Nam province, northern Hai Duong province and Hanoi capital city, including a medical officer and a security staff of Da Nang Hospital, according to the ministry.

Five new cases in Hai Duong province are reportedly related to an outbreak in a street of its Hai Duong city, where some other cases had been confirmed, said the ministry.

A total of 467 patients have recovered from the disease as of Monday, according to the ministry.

There are over 107,600 people being quarantined and monitored in the country, Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.

Starting from Tuesday, people who do not wear face masks in public places will be fined up to 300,000 Vietnamese dong (13 U.S. dollars) in northern Cao Bang province, Vietnam News Agency cited the provincial People's Committee at a meeting on Monday.

The local authorities also suggested the people to limit gatherings and strictly implement epidemic prevention and control measures including temperature scanning, hand sanitization and wearing face masks at crowded events.

Earlier, cities including Hanoi and southern Ho Chi Minh City also imposed the same fine for those without face masks in public places as part of the efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic. Enditem
