ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Greece announced on Friday 460 new confirmed COVID-19 infections diagnosed over the past 24 hours. It is a new daily record of the country since the first case was registered in late February.

The previous largest daily spike of 453 new cases was recorded on Sept. 21.

The total number of confirmed infections in Greece now stands at 19,346, according to a press release by the National Public Health Organization.

In addition, five deaths were recorded on Friday, bringing the total fatality to 398, and 85 patients were currently treated in intensive care units.

Among the 460 new cases on Friday, the largest number is traced in the Attica region (207 new infections) where the bulk of Greece's population lives.

Due to the high epidemiological load in Athens and the wider region, the government decided to extend to Oct. 12 a series of restrictive measures introduced a few weeks ago, Nikos Hardalias, deputy minister for Civil Protection and Crisis Management said during a regular press briefing on Friday.

They include a limit of nine people for indoor and outdoor gatherings and suspension of indoor and outdoor concerts.

Similar restrictions have been implemented in many regions lately as the authorities make efforts to avoid a new nationwide full lockdown like the one imposed in spring for over a month. Enditem
