TEHRAN, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Iran reported on Saturday 13,576 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 2,640,670.

The pandemic has so far claimed 74,524 lives in Iran, up by 283 in the past 24 hours, the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education said in a written briefing published on its official website.

A total of 2,092,381 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 5,545 remain in intensive care units, the ministry said.

The report added that 16,929,609 tests have so far been carried out across the country.

As of Saturday, 1,286,004 people in the country have received coronavirus vaccines, with 262,611 of them having gotten their second doses.

In a meeting of the Iranian national headquarters fighting COVID-19 in Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday that the fourth wave of COVID-19 in Iran has reached its peak in all of Iran's provinces, and it is starting to recede, state TV reported.

Thanks to the efforts of Iran's medical staff, Rouhani noted, the number of deceased in the fourth wave was almost the same as in the previous surge, although the number of infected was much higher.

Iran has recently implemented restrictions on businesses and travels in high-risk areas amid a new wave of the virus spread in the country.

The country reported the first cases of the disease in February 2020. Enditem
