BERLIN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The German engineering and technology company Bosch officially opened its new semiconductor factory in Dresden of the Free State of Saxony on Monday.
"With the help of artificial intelligence, we will take semiconductor manufacturing to the next level," said Volkmar Denner, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH, in a statement.
Bosch invested around one billion euros (1.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the high-tech facility, the largest single investment in the company's more than 130-year history.
Production would start in July, six months earlier than planned. The chips produced in the new plant would initially be used in Bosch's own power tools but later supplied to the automotive industry. For automotive customers, chip production will start in September, three months earlier than planned.
Construction work had begun on an area of around 100,000 square meters three years ago. Today, around 250 people work at the new semiconductor plant. The number of employees is expected to grow to 700 once the factory was fully operational, according to Bosch.
The Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) of Germany also funded the new factory as part of a joint European project for microelectronics with around 140 million euros. (1 euro = 1.22 U.S. dollars) Enditem
