KABUL, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants on Monday claimed to have taken control over Aybak city, capital of northern Afghanistan's Samangan province.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on his social media account that the militants captured a provincial police station, provincial directorate of telecommunication, as well as a national intelligence agency office roughly at midday on Monday.
The Afghan government has not confirmed the claim by the Taliban so far.
Earlier on the day, Afghan Ministry of Interior said that Afghan security forces repelled a militant attack on Aybak Sunday night, killing 20 Taliban militants and injuring eight others.
The Taliban has reportedly seized Sari Pul and Taluqan in the northern region, and Zaranj city in the western part of the country.
Fighting has intensified since May in Afghanistan and Taliban militants have recently been mounting pressures on major cities. Enditem
