SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Indian army said on Tuesday that a militant was killed in a gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The gunfight broke out at Behramgala area in frontier Poonch district, about 175 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to the spokesman, the government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off, and an assault rifle has been recovered from the gunfight spot.

Officials said the army and police had cordoned off the area on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

Meanwhile, the death toll in Monday's militant attack on a police bus on the outskirts of Srinagar has risen to three, and 11 others wounded in the attack were still undergoing treatment in hospitals, according to the police.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

The militants often target government force personnel either with grenade attacks or resort to firing, with gunfights between the two sides taking place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Enditem
