JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The cultivation work has started to produce more orange orchards on over 270 acres of land in Afghanistan's eastern province Nangarhar, an official said Monday.
Launched by the provincial Nangarhar canal agriculture department, the project covers an area of 278 acres of land in the Abdulkhil area of the province, Mawlawi Ghulam Rahman, head of the department told reporters.
The project costs 2,500,000 afghanis to plant over 18,000 orange saplings and to provide direct jobs for up to 200 people in the province, said the official.
Cultivation of citrus, including orange saplings in the vast areas, would bring high incomes for the farmers as well as the greenery of abundant sites in the province.
The citrus fruit, including orange and lemons harvest, has reportedly seen a significant increase of over 12,000 tons this year, compared to the year of 2020 in this warm-climate eastern province, according to local officials. (1 U.S. dollar equals 99.5 afghanis) Enditem
