HANOI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Vietnam surpassed the 2-million mark on Saturday, reaching 2,007,862, with 35,480 deaths, according to its Ministry of Health.

The Southeast Asian country reported 16,378 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, including 16,305 locally transmitted and 73 imported, the ministry said.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi continued to be the epicenter with 2,810 infections logged on Saturday, followed by central Da Nang city with 874 cases and northern Hai Phong city with 814 cases.

Nationwide, as many as 1,717,964 patients have so far recovered.

The entire adult population has received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, just 10 months after the immunization campaign began, according to the ministry. As of Saturday, some 166.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 78.6 million first shots, 72.1 million second shots, and 16.3 million third shots, have been administered, it said.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity.

As of Saturday, the country has registered over 2 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year. It has also confirmed 50 patients with the new Omicron variant, who have all recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival. Enditem
